Creating Children and Young Adult Stories, Armed with Imagination and a Pen

I’ve always been brought up to help out others when you can.  I routinely make several donations of clothing, household items etc. to Goodwill each year.  My husband and I support our church and other local charities so when I heard about this Eyecare About Reading book drive I was eager to participate.  This program donates eye exams and glasses if needed to children who might otherwise not get this care.  For every 3 books donated one eye exam is given to a child in need.

You may not know this about me, but when I was seven years old I was diagnosed with cataracts.  Yes, those things that are usually assocatied with the elderly.  I was seven and I was slowly going blind.  The doctors fitted me with glasses to try to help my vision, but by the time I was thirteen I had to have surgery to remove the catacts and my lenses.  According to my docs, I could not have lense implants put in until my body had stopped growing in my twenties.  I wore either coke-bottle bifocals or both contact lenses and glasses for much of my adolescent life.  That was not a fun period, but I was amazed at the detail of things around me that I never knew existed before.  My sight had gotten so bad, but I never knew it.  I remember looking at some leaves on trees and not realizing that there were these little specks of color and veins in them.  They had looked like green blobs before.

During college I had the surgery to get lense implants that gave me distance vision so I just wear glasses now to read. I am so thankful for my clear sight now.  I get to see the wonderful faces of my husband and my smiling children.  Every child should have that gift.
